Hysterectomy is a procedure done for both cancer and non-cancerous conditions. The decision to remove the uterus for a non–cancerous condition is complex. The message here is that women need to be fully informed of all their choices. They also need to understand that the evidence for the different choices change frequently and each person needs to find the best available information. The decision still rests with the surgeon and the patient. The patient ultimately has to make the final decision with the best available information. In communities with orange bars far to the right, the decision for surgery is being made far more often than we would expect.
