The Maine Quality Forum held a statewide In a Heartbeat conference on Thursday, November 9, to improve survival and quality of life for Mainers who suffer heart attacks.
Purpose
This conference brought together ER physicians, nurses, EMS providers, cardiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and hospital and community health program representatives to adopt a statewide care map that helps ensure that anyone experiencing a heart attack in Maine receives timely, evidence-based care.
Speakers
Keynote Speaker James Jollis, MD, FACC, co-director of Reperfusion of Acute Myocardial Infarction in Carolina Emergency Departments (RACE) discussed the successes and challenges of improving the salvage of threatened heart muscle by improving the speed of delivery of proven clot busting techniques in North Carolina.
North Carolina serves as a model for other states to follow to decrease the disability of and the deaths caused by acute heart attack. Dr. Jollis explained the successes of the project across 5 regions and 68 hospitals. Dr. Jollis helped translate lessons learned to the Maine environment.
